"Every Day" by Buddy Holly
This week I chose to listen to the song, "Every Day" by Buddy Holly. It isn't a song that we listened to in class but I thought I would try something new and choose a different song by someone we were learning about since there wasn't a ton of options this week. This helped me understand who Buddy Holly was a little better. The first thing that sticks out to me about this song is the bells that break away from the rest of the instruments that are played throughout the song. Then it sounds like someone is slapping their knee for percussion. There isn't many instruments used in this song, that gives it an acoustic feel. It isn't a long song being only 2 minutes long, it is easy to listen to the whole thing. The lyrics are about a guy who is patiently waiting for the girl of his dreams to come his way and he isn't going to make the first move. “Everyday, it's a gettin’ closer, Going faster than a roller coaster, Love like yours will surely come my way, (hey, hey, hey).” The lyrics tell a story throughout and it progresses but also repeats some parts which helps the lyrics interact with each other. The target audience is probably teenagers and young adults who are looking for love <3 I enjoyed listening to it, I think the lyrics and the idea behind the song is really cute!
Buddy Holley is one of the first musicians we have talked about that I have wanted to learn more about. He was so young when he was producing music, and you could see how he adapted to styles that he thought would be popular, especially among the teenagers. He really had a variety. The two songs on the list use lots of instruments, but then on songs like this, it really was just a light "knee-like" rhythm and bell-sound. Super sad he died so young with all of his potential. Glad some of his music stuck around.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tyler! I haven't been too interested in previous artists besides Louis Armstrong but now we are getting to artists that interest me and the genres are shifting to become more of what I listen to now. I like how there's not too many instruments in this song because it makes it simple and I like simple!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your analysis of this song and artist! This is the second song I have listened to from Buddy Holly and definitely can hear how talented he was. It really is too bad that he died so tragically and suddenly. His voice sure sustains this song, with just the bells and knee-slapping in the background. Cool song!
ReplyDeleteI love that you went for something new this week that wasn't listened to in class! Reading about it (since I have not listened to the song yet) paints a picture in my mind for what it is going to be like when I do listen to it. With the acoustic feel you mention, I am curious on how that matches up with Buddy Holly's rock style. Reading the lyrics you included makes me excited to listen! :)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your analysis on this song! I would agree that Buddy Holly was very talented! It's unfortunate that he passed away so young. I feel like he would have created more songs that we'd still listen to today!
